Cells and premium squares
A board is a square grid of cells. Most are plain; the rest are premium squares, which change what a play scores. There are 18 kinds of premium square.
- Plain cell: scores a tile at face value.
Classic squares
The four classic squares can appear on every board.
- Double letter: Doubles the tile placed here.
- Double word: Doubles every word through it.
- Triple letter: Triples the tile placed here.
- Triple word: Triples every word through it.
Exotic squares
Each board offers only a few exotic types: 2 on easy, 3 on medium, 4 on hard, 5 on brutal.
- Bridge: Plus 80 if the play connects two different words already on the board.
- Clone: Copies the tile played here back into your rack.
- Cold: Dead unless used on your last play, where it triples the word.
- Cross: Doubles the crossing word only, never the main one.
- Escalator: Doubles a word on your first play, triples on your second, quadruples after.
- Gate: Triples the word, but only if it is five letters or longer.
- Humble: Plus 40 for a tile worth 6 or less.
- Keystone: Plus 60 if the word uses two or more tiles already on the board.
- Match: Doubles the tile if that same letter appears elsewhere in the play.
- Mirror: Plus 160 if the word also reads as a word backwards.
- Rich: Plus 40 for a tile worth 14 or more.
- Toll: Halves every word running through it.
- Void: Any tile here scores nothing.
- Vowel bonus: Plus 32 if the tile is a vowel.
Weights
Each square's page gives its weights. Placement weight is how often the square is drawn for a cell once a board can carry it; selection weight is how often an exotic type is chosen for a board at all. Both are relative to the other squares.
