Glossary
The words Rackled uses, and what each one means.
- Achievement
- A named feat, earned by what happens in a round. Achievements pay reputation. More
- Anti-achievement
- An achievement for something that happens to you rather than something you pull off, such as finishing below zero. More
- Bag
- The tiles still to be drawn, in a fixed order that is the same for everyone playing the puzzle. Your rack refills from it after each play. More
- Best line
- The highest-scoring sequence of plays the solver found for a puzzle. Your round is graded against it. More
- Blank
- A tile that stands for any letter you choose, and scores nothing itself. More
- Board
- The square grid of cells a round is played on. Each difficulty has its own size. More
- Cell
- One square of the board. A cell is plain or a premium square. More
- Cross word
- A word a play forms at right angles to its main word, through a tile it places. Cross words must be real words, and they score too. More
- Difficulty
- One of easy, medium, hard or brutal: it sets the board size, the bag, and how many plays a round allows. More
- Digraph
- A tile carrying two letters in one cell. There are 8: QU, TH, ER, IN, ST, CH, ED, AN. More
- Draft
- The mode where only your rack is shown and the rest of the bag stays hidden. More
- Exotic square
- Any premium square beyond the classic four. Each board offers only a few exotic types. More
- Leftover penalty
- The points of every tile still in your rack or the bag when a round ends, subtracted from your score. More
- Main word
- The word a play forms along the row or column its tiles were placed in. More
- Percent of best
- Your final score as a percentage of the best line's score, rounded to a whole number. It can pass 100% when you find a line the solver missed, and it can go below zero. More
- Placement
- Putting one tile from your rack on an empty cell. Placements stay pending, and can be taken back, until you play them. More
- Play
- Committing the tiles you have placed as one turn. A round allows from 5 to 8 plays, depending on the difficulty. More
- A cell that changes a play's score. There are 18 kinds. More
- Rack
- The 7 tiles you hold, refilled from the bag after each play. More
- Rackled
- Stuck with a rack that will not play. Also the game. More
- Reputation
- Points achievements pay into a standing kept across every round you play. Reputation never changes a round's score. More
- Sealed
- The open-bag mode: the whole bag is on view, in its draw order, from the start. More
- Seed word
- The word already across the middle row when a round starts, which your first play must connect to. More
- Solver
- The program that searches each puzzle for its best line. More
